Exhibition tackles emotional reality of displaced people

“Refugees,” an exhibition of large-scale works in oil and graphite by Joyce Weber, will be on view at the Eastport Gallery July 15 to August 4. A reception for the show will be offered from 5-7 pm, Saturday, July 22. Weber created the works as a way to express her empathy and concern for the people facing turmoil, separation, heartache and fear in the Middle East. “Families are being separated” said Weber.  “These people had stable homes and good lives, and now these are being torn apart.  I just wanted to acknowledge that.” The largest of the pieces is 7x4-feet.

Nuttall, Muzijevic Costanza and Smith to Perform in Machias

On Tuesday, July 25 at 7 p.m. Machias Bay Chamber Concerts (MBCC) will present a performance by violinist Geoff Nuttall, pianist Pedja Muzijevic, cellist Christopher Costanza, and oboist James Austin Smith. 

The concert will be held at Centre Street Congregational Church, and the program will include: Mozart’s Violin Sonata in A Major, K. 305; Saint-Saens’ Oboe Sonata, Op. 166; Debussy’s Cello Sonata in D minor; and Mendelssohn’s Piano Trio No. 2 in C minor, Op. 66.

The Machias area Little League 9-10 year-old baseball All Stars opened tournament play with a pair of victories last week. On June 25, Machias traveled to Bucksport and defeated their hosts by a score of 10-0 in four innings, due to the run rule.

Ashby three-time winner in International Marathon

Former Eastport resident and Shead High School cross-country runner, Robert Ashby of Brunswick, won the Bay of Fundy International Marathon for the third year in a row with a time of 2:49:03. Ashby won by two minutes over runner-up Sam Goldberg, whose finishing time was 2:51:23.

Gary Krugger came in 3rd place in 2:56:29, while John Brun and Gabriel Andrews rounded out this year’s top five with times of 3:24:30 and 3:24:37.

Sharon Myers Stanhope - Machias

Sharon Stanhope, 70, widow of Dale Stanhope, died Dec. 22, 2016.  She was born Oct. 4, 1946 to Edgar and Margaret Myers.

She is survived by Susan Stanhope, Teddy Stanhope, Christian Stanhope, Stacey Ramsey, Kathleen Trueworthy, Cynthia Philbrook, a brother, Gregory Myers, twelve grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.  In addition to her husband and her parents, she was predeceased by her granddaughter, Brittany.

She is also survived by in-laws Annie Colby, Kate Lawrence, Richard Stanhope, Louise Sinclair, Judy Spencer, and Beverly Elwell.
