Island schools have success offshore

Every year during the Rotary Festival on Grand Manan Island an alumni basketball game is held at the islands’ consolidated school. 

The island of Grand Manan is roughly 15 miles long and has a population of around 2,500. Their high school sometimes has an enrollment of 60 or 70 students that come from the island communities of North Head, Castalia Ingalls Head and Grand Harbour Seal Cove, Woodward’s Cove and the neighboring island of White Head.

Lubec girls dominate at Bulldog Blitz

The Lubec Junior High School Lady Hornets, as expected, dominated play in the Annual Bulldog Blitz Basketball Tournament on Nov. 17 and 18 at the Rose M. Gaffney School gym in Machias.

Lubec posted a 4-0 mark in the two-day event and outscored their four opponents 105-74. Union 134 finished second at 3-4 followed by Elm Street Elementary School 1-2, Patriots 1-2, Calais 0-2, and Rose Gaffney 0-2.

Lubec opened the tourney Nov. 17 against Union 134.

Lynx sweep UMM Clipper squads

The New Hampshire Technical Institute’s (NHTI) Lynx women’s and men’s basketball teams were both victorious over the visiting University of Maine at Machias (UMM) Clipper teams Nov. 12 in Concord, New Hampshire.

The Clipper women went into the contest with a 3-1 record, and were able to stay with the Lady Lynx for most of the game.

NHTI led 14-12 after a quarter before pulling away over the next 10 minutes. The Lynx outscored UMM 26-10 to go into the halftime break on top, 40-22.

UMM Clipper mens’ basketball start the season 2-1

The University of Maine at Machias (UMM) men’s basketball team has gotten off to a 2-1 start under third-year coach, Troy Alley. UMM opened its 2017-18 season on the road against the Southern Maine Community College Rams on Oct. 29.

Both Yankee Small College Conference rivals played on even terms throughout most of the game. 

The contest was tied 39-39 at the break. UMM managed to hold off the Rams and outscore them 38-34 over the final 20 minutes to squeak out a 27-23 decision.

PVC and Aroostook League honors athletes

Six of our eight Washington County high schools belong to the Down East Athletic Conference.

Seven of our eight high schools belong to either the Penobscot Valley Conference (PVC) or the Aroostook League.

At the end of each sports season — fall, winter and spring — the top athletes are honored for their athletic achievements and some for their academic achievements.

Calais Blue Devils dominate in volleyball

Two-time defending state champion Calais dominated the year’s Downeast Athletic Conference selections in volleyball.

Ann Scott’s club played four of their players on the all conference squad. The Blue Devils All Stars were Faith Tirell, Twyla Smiley, Abby Condon, and Kylie Donovan. The Blue Devils started off the season at 1-3, and went undefeated the rest of the way to finish 14-3 and a second state title in as many years.

Strong start for Lady Clippers basketball

The University of Maine at Machias (UMM) Lady Clippers basketball squad has gotten off to a 3-1 start in regulation play.

Coach Troy Alley’s club played three exhibition contests in Fredericton, NB against the host St. Thomas University Tommies, the Mount Allison Mounties of Sackville, NB, and the Mt. Vincent Mystics of Halifax, Nova Scotia prior to the start of regular season play.

The Lady Clippers hosted the University of New Brunswick Lady Seawolves in a non-conference match-up Oct. 27 at the Reynolds Center.
