Jonesporters reject money for Ice Hill South study

Forty-eight people turned up at a special town meeting in the Jonesport town office Monday, Nov. 27 to act on the expenditure of town funds for an engineering study at the foot of Ice Hill South, a short, steep side road from Main Street leading to four houses, three of which are located on the bank of Moosabec Reach.

Jonesport planners to meet

The Jonesport Planning Board will meet at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 21 in the town office to consider applications from Daryl Young and Carol and Daniel Colby to renew a permit issued October 18, 2016 for work on the Fire Road, and from Brian Hoops, represented by Jim Carver, for a house and garage attached by a breezeway on Flake Point Bar Road.

The town office will close at noon on Wednesday, November 22 in observance of Thanksgiving.

Ethel Quackenbush Jonesport

Ethel Quackenbush, 97, mother of Connie Wiggin of Jonesport, died November 3, 2017, in Ashland, Kentucky, following a long illness.  She was one of five daughters of Ada Rollins Massacar and Clarion Rand Massacar.   She grew up in Hamburg, New York, and graduated from Devilbis High School in Toledo, Ohio.

Activity at Sawyer Memorial Congregational Church

Steeplejacks were still working on the 100+year-old spire of Jonesport’s Sawyer Memorial Congregational Church last week, removing old wood before capping it for the winter. The bell is stored in a nearby barn. Last Saturday, church volunteers put on a craft fair and luncheon to boost the belfry fund.

Bridge beginnings from Beals to Jonesport

The new bridge to Beals began last week with work on the approaches. Here, earth was removed on the Beals side to replace the 90 degree turn off the old bridge with an angle much less acute for the many tractor trailer trucks that come from the mainland. On the Jonesport side, the old house that Eddie Hagan used as a wreath shop was torn down to widen Bridge Street and provide room for power lines.

Jonesport’s beacon bell and belfry restoration

Work on Jonesport’s Sawyer Memorial Congregational Church 100+-year-old steeple continues. Last week, Phase 2 was completed with the removal of the belfry and clock. The bell and remains of the belfry will be capped to keep out the weather while fundraising for a fiberglass replacement continues. A Christmas craft fair is planned for November 4, with a fish chowder/beef stew lunch, silent auction, white elephant sale, hourly door prizes and a grand prize (turkey dinner) drawing at 1 p.m. Photos by Nancy Beal
