Verrill “Sonny” Worcester - Jonesport

Verrill “Sonny” Worcester passed away at his home on Monday, February 19, 2018 at age 88 . Sonny was born to Erma and Verrill Worcester in Jonesport  Maine on March 18, 1929. He graduated Columbia Falls High School with the class of ’47 and  married Marilyn (Diz) Worcester in September 1950. He was a loving husband and father and a doting Grampie and “PA” to his large family.

Jonesport to explore purchase of campground

Three members of Jonesport’s working waterfront access and harbor committees attended the selectmen’s Feb. 14 meeting to discuss an offer from the Sawyer family to sell the town the campground property on Henry Point. In response to an inquiry from the town, the Sawyers recently wrote to the town, offering to sell the seven-acre mini-peninsula for $450,000.

Jonesport responds to county’s push for more deputies

Following two meetings hosted by the county commissioners last month on the increase in crime in Washington County because of the drug trade, county manager Betsy Fitzgerald wrote all 46 towns in the county with information about what the commissioners wanted to do in response, and to ask towns for their reaction. Jonesport’s letter was discussed at the selectmen’s February 7 meeting.

Michael Wight of the Maine Department of Transportation has confirmed that he is scheduling another public hearing concerning the Machias dike. The hearing will be held in late February or early March, and will likely be held at UMM to accomodate a large audience. The hearing will address possibilities for replacing the dike with a structure that could prevent or limit flooding in part of Machias’ 100-year floodplain. You’ll find the details in this paper when they’re available.

Ice Hill South on hold in Jonesport

A promised public meeting on Jonesport’s Ice Hill South has been postponed pending the collection of further information, according to Selectman Harry Fish Jr. Contacted by telephone, Fish said that at their January 3 meeting the selectmen decided to contact all five landowners on the lane to see if they would waive payment for any decrease in their property values if the town discontinued the road.

Peabody Memorial Library nominated for BSB public service grant, awarded Maine Public Library grant

When members of Jonesport’s Peabody Memorial Library board of directors met Dec. 4, they already knew that the facility had been nominated for a Community Matters More grant given by Bangor Savings Bank (BSB). The next day, they received an email from Librarian Heidi Hinkley informing them that a $500 grant for children’s programmable robots was on its way from the Maine Public Library Fund.
