Machias Police Budget Pared, Airport Fees Doubled

The long process of creating a town budget that will keep Machias running without raising taxes continued last week as the budget committee heard proposals from the Machias Police and School Departments. Before the police budget proposal, Town Manager Chris Loughlin brought up a $50 donation to the Ark Animal Shelter in memory of Gene Lord. The board unanimously supported the donation.

Downeast at High Risk for Flooding

“Basically the entire Downeast region will soon have conditions conducive to flooding,” predicted Greg Stewart, US Geological Survey for Maine. “It’s definitely going to be open-water flooding. But because of the substantial snowpack, any rain will push the envelope even higher.”

MBACC Plans Annual Dinner, Auction

The Machias Bay Area Chamber of Commerce has planned a night of fun, dining and auction sales, set to begin at 5 p.m. Friday, April 24, at the Lee Pellon Center in Machias.

The event will also be a venue for members to showcase their food specialties at the dinner buffet. More than 200 people attended last year’s event and tickets for this year’s festivities are $25 per person and may be purchased at the chamber office at 11 Main Street.
